Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are an exciting way to explore New Mexico’s beautiful open spaces. Knowing and following state laws ensures that everyone — riders, rangers, and wildlife — stays safe.

Basic Rules:

To keep riders safe and protect our open spaces, all OHV operators must follow New Mexico’s state laws and local regulations. Review the key rules below before heading out on your next ride.
  • Registration required for all OHVs on public lands.
  • Youth under 18 must complete an approved OHV safety course.
  • Helmets required for riders under 18.
  • Eye protection for all riders
  • Ride only on designated roads and trails
