King of the Hill

Come join us on March 10, 2018, for the 4th Annual King of the Hill 5K/10K and Half Marathon trail run. This event will be the third of its kind to be held on El Cerro de Los Lunas Trailhead, located 3 miles west of I-25 on Highway 6 in Los Lunas.

The 5K will take you along the "Bowl Trail" on the west side of El Cerro de Los Lunas. It will be a mostly flat course with a few small hills.

The 10K will begin on the same route as the 5K then divert up a steep hill to meet the "Overlook Trail," which offers breathtaking views of the Rio Grande Valley and the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. Runners will descend the hill and meet back up with the 5K course to finish. The 10K has approximately 700 feet of elevation change.

The Half Marathon has 2100 ft of elevation gain/loss covering the 10k overlook trail and continues to the eastside of the Los Lunas Hill. This run will prove to be a challenge for any trail runner.

All races begin and end at the El Cerro de Los Lunas Trailhead.

Course Description:

The 5K course follows the "Bowl Trail" and is relatively flat with a few small hills. The surface is a mix of well maintained crusher find trails, compacted dirt trails, and a few sandy spots.
The 10K course is extremely challenging. It shares the first mile with the 5K and then diverts up a steep hill to the "Overlook Trail."  After ascending the steep hill, runners are rewarded with breathtaking views of five different mountain ranges and the Rio Grande Valley. After making the final ascent to the west face of El Cerro de Los Lunas, runners will descend to rejoin the 5K course for the final two miles. This trail is a mix of crusher fine, compacted dirt, and very sandy hills. There is approximately 730 feet of elevation gain on this course.

The half marathon will be an extremely challenging race. From the high point of the 10K course, the half climbs up and over El Cerro De Los Lunas down the bluffs on the east face before hitting a turn-around and doing it all over again! The half will have nearly 2100 ft. of elevation change.
