The Los Lunas Police Department recently purchased a new SEGWAY to expand the department’s community policing program. The SEGWAY will be used by officers to patrol the Village’s various shopping centers, neighborhoods and parks as well as at special events such as Summer Fest, parades and sports functions. The Los Lunas Police Department’s School Resource Officer will also use the SEGWAY at various school campuses throughout the week. The SEGWAY is not only practical but provides a topic of conversation between community members and officers. Community members become curious about the strange 2 wheeled vehicle and stop to talk to officers who are patrolling the area on one. Community members first talk to the officers about the SEGWAY and then the conversation usually continues with a discussion of problems in their neighborhood or business and the officers begin to problem solve with community members developing solutions to these problems.
